you won't notice the difference between pcie 3.0 and 2.0 since the graphic cards of this generation don't use that much bandwidth.
if you have 8Gb of ram and the new gpu you should be able to play BF3 just fine.

Do you have a core 2 duo or a core 2 quad?
To run Bf3 you need a core 2 quad which runs at roughly 3.0ghz to get it to run smooth, its a very cpu intensive game.

I suggest the AMD/ATI (sapphire HD 7870 XT 2gb whit turboboost) because nvidia has a bug with Halo where active camouflage doesn't show up.

I suggest to water-cool when over clocking I also agree with gijs the amd is the better card but NVidia supports more games so its witch ever you go for

but take my warning
do not overclock 30% faster than stock without a water cooler and a satisfactory mobo

either way your cpu and either one of those cards can run bf3

have fun

ps: get a new psu

I5 will be fine, I7 only adds hyper threading which you're not gonna need if only gaming.

If you're going to run server applications or video encoding then go with the I7.

Get an i5 I have a i7 and an i5 and the i5 runs games much smoothly. This is because it has hyper threading in some cases it can slow down gaming

Ps: want a badass system get i7 extreme
